John Cena Biography

Actor and WWE brand ambassador · Entertainment and professional wrestling

Who is John Cena?

John Cena is an American actor and retired professional wrestler. During 24 years with WWE he became a record-setting 17-time world champion and the company’s face for over a decade. Today he is a successful Hollywood actor and a WWE brand ambassador.

Early life and education

Cena was born in West Newbury, Massachusetts, in 1977. He played American football at Springfield College, where he was team captain, and graduated in 1999 with a degree in exercise physiology and kinesiology. He then pursued bodybuilding and worked odd jobs, including as a limousine driver, while training to wrestle.

Career highlights

  • WWE debut (2002): rose quickly with a rapper character and became WWE’s top star from the mid-2000s.
  • Championships: a record 14-time WWE Champion and 17-time world champion overall, plus two Royal Rumble wins.
  • Acting: started with The Marine (2006), then won praise for comedy roles in Trainwreck, Blockers and The Suicide Squad.
  • Peacemaker (2022–2025): led his own superhero series.

Major achievements

His run as a heroic character from 2003 to 2025 was the longest in WWE history. He completed a farewell tour and retired from in-ring competition at the end of 2025.

From wrestler to actor

Many wrestlers try acting, but few become trusted leading actors. Cena first appeared in action films, then surprised audiences with comedy roles that showed good timing and a willingness to laugh at himself. Directors began casting him in big franchises such as Bumblebee and F9, and his role as Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad led to his own HBO series. He balanced film schedules with part-time WWE appearances for years before his final retirement match in December 2025.

Interesting facts

Cena started learning Mandarin Chinese in 2016 to help WWE grow in China and has spoken it at press conferences. His catchphrase “You can’t see me” and the meme around it made him one of the most recognised internet personalities in the world. In 2025 he won his record 17th world title by beating Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41, then wrestled his final match on 13 December 2025.
