Major achievements
Mr. Bean’s mostly wordless humour travels across languages, which is why the character is popular in so many countries. Atkinson has been named among the best British comedians in several polls.
The making of Mr. Bean
Atkinson developed Mr. Bean as a character who almost never speaks, so the humour comes from movement, timing and facial expression. That choice made the show easy to understand anywhere, and it was sold to many countries around the world. The films Bean (1997) and Mr. Bean’s Holiday (2007) became international box office hits, and the animated series has run for many years with Atkinson voicing the character.
Mr. Bean at the London 2012 Olympics
One of Atkinson’s most famous appearances came at the London 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony. As Mr. Bean, he played a single repeated note in an orchestra performing the Chariots of Fire theme, then dreamed himself into the film’s famous beach race. Watched by a huge global TV audience, the sketch showed again how his physical comedy needs no words.
