Who is Elon Musk?
Elon Musk is an entrepreneur and engineer who leads Tesla and SpaceX and owns X (formerly Twitter). He has been the world’s richest person since 2025 and in 2026 became the first person estimated to be worth more than one trillion US dollars. He is one of the most influential and debated business figures of his time.
Early life and education
Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa, in 1971 and taught himself programming as a child. He moved to Canada in 1989, studied at Queen’s University and then transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, earning degrees in physics and economics in 1997. He moved to California and briefly enrolled at Stanford before leaving to start a company.
Career highlights
- Zip2 (1995): co-founded a web software company, sold in 1999.
- X.com and PayPal: X.com merged with Confinity in 2000 to form PayPal, later bought by eBay.
- SpaceX (2002): founded to cut the cost of spaceflight; built reusable Falcon rockets, Dragon spacecraft and Starlink internet.
- Tesla: invested in 2004 and became CEO in 2008, turning electric cars into a mainstream product.

Major achievements
SpaceX became the first private company to send astronauts to the International Space Station and made landing and reusing rockets routine. Tesla became one of the world’s most valuable car makers and helped push the entire auto industry toward electric vehicles.
Expertise
Musk is known for “first principles” thinking: breaking problems down to basic physics and costs, then rebuilding solutions. He sets very ambitious goals and timelines, which often slip but still push his companies forward.
Leadership and controversy
His management style is demanding, and his public statements and political activity attract strong praise and criticism. In 2025 he led the US government’s Department of Government Efficiency effort before stepping away from the role.
Other ventures
He co-founded OpenAI in 2015 before leaving, and founded Neuralink (brain–computer interfaces) and The Boring Company (tunnels).
Lessons for your career
Musk’s path shows the power of bold goals and rapid experimentation, and also the risks of overpromising.
