Who is Mark Zuckerberg?
Mark Zuckerberg is an American businessman and programmer who co-founded Facebook and leads its parent company, Meta Platforms, as chairman and CEO. Meta’s apps, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads, are used by billions of people every day, making him one of the most influential and wealthiest people in technology.
Early life and education
Zuckerberg was born in 1984 and grew up in Dobbs Ferry, New York. He started programming as a child and later attended Phillips Exeter Academy. At Harvard he built several small projects, including Facemash, before launching “TheFacebook” from his dorm room in February 2004 with classmates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes.
Career highlights

- Meta (2021): renamed the company to focus on the “metaverse”, virtual and augmented reality.
Major achievements
He built one of the largest communication networks in history and kept founder control of the company for more than two decades. Under his leadership Meta launched Threads in 2023 and released the Llama family of AI models, making AI a central part of its strategy.
Expertise
Zuckerberg is a hands-on technical founder known for long-term bets, fast product iteration and buying promising companies early.
Leadership and challenges
His rise has brought intense scrutiny. Meta has faced lawsuits and investigations over user privacy, data sharing and the effect of social media on young people, and he testified before the US Congress after the 2018 Cambridge Analytica scandal. These debates continue to shape regulation of the tech industry.
Philanthropy
In 2015 he and his wife, Priscilla Chan, pledged to give 99% of their Meta shares over their lifetimes and created the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, which focuses on science, health and education.
Lessons for your career
Start building early, ship quickly and learn from users. Zuckerberg’s story also shows that as products grow, responsibility for their impact grows too.
