Who is Rowan Atkinson?

Rowan Atkinson is an English actor, comedian and writer, famous around the world as Mr. Bean. He is also known for the historical sitcom Blackadder and the spy comedy films Johnny English.

Early life and education

Atkinson was born in 1955 in County Durham in north-east England. Before comedy, he studied engineering: he earned a BSc in electrical and electronic engineering from Newcastle University and an MSc in electrical engineering from The Queen’s College, Oxford. At Oxford he met writer Richard Curtis and composer Howard Goodall, his long-time collaborators.

Career highlights

  • Not the Nine O’Clock News (1979–1982): his first big success on British television.
  • Blackadder (1983–1989): one of Britain’s best-loved sitcoms.
  • Mr. Bean (1990–1995): an almost silent character that made him famous worldwide, followed by two films and an animated series.
  • Johnny English (from 2003): a hit spy comedy film series.
  • Other work: Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually, the voice of Zazu in The Lion King and Wonka (2023).

Major achievements

Mr. Bean’s mostly wordless humour travels across languages, which is why the character is popular in so many countries. Atkinson has been named among the best British comedians in several polls.

The making of Mr. Bean

Atkinson developed Mr. Bean as a character who almost never speaks, so the humour comes from movement, timing and facial expression. That choice made the show easy to understand anywhere, and it was sold to many countries around the world. The films Bean (1997) and Mr. Bean’s Holiday (2007) became international box office hits, and the animated series has run for many years with Atkinson voicing the character.

Mr. Bean at the London 2012 Olympics

One of Atkinson’s most famous appearances came at the London 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony. As Mr. Bean, he played a single repeated note in an orchestra performing the Chariots of Fire theme, then dreamed himself into the film’s famous beach race. Watched by a huge global TV audience, the sketch showed again how his physical comedy needs no words.
