Jensen Huang

Jensen Huang Biography

Co-founder, President and CEO of NVIDIA · Semiconductors and artificial intelligence

Who is Jensen Huang?

Jensen Huang is a Taiwanese-American engineer and business leader who co-founded NVIDIA in 1993 and has led it as president and CEO ever since. Under his leadership, NVIDIA grew from a graphics chip start-up into the company whose processors power much of today’s artificial intelligence.

Early life and education

Huang was born in Taipei in 1963 and spent part of his childhood in Thailand before moving to the United States as a young boy. He went to school in Kentucky and later Oregon, and as a teenager worked at a Denny’s restaurant as a dishwasher and waiter. He earned a degree in electrical engineering from Oregon State University and later a master’s degree from Stanford University while working full time.

Career journey

  • AMD: began his career designing microprocessors.
  • LSI Logic: moved into chip design and management, where he met his future co-founders.
  • NVIDIA (1993): co-founded with Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem after planning the business at a Denny’s in San Jose.

Major achievements

NVIDIA nearly ran out of money in its early years before the RIVA 128 chip saved the company in 1997. In 1999 it launched the GeForce 256 and popularised the term GPU. In 2006 it released CUDA, which let developers use GPUs for general computing. That bet made NVIDIA the leading platform for AI research and, later, generative AI. In October 2025, NVIDIA became the first company to reach a $5 trillion market value.

Expertise

Huang is known for deep chip engineering knowledge combined with long-term strategic bets. He often invests years ahead of a market, as he did with CUDA long before AI demand arrived.

Leadership and impact

He is one of the longest-serving founder CEOs in technology. NVIDIA’s GPUs and software now support AI research labs, cloud providers, self-driving car projects, robotics and scientific computing around the world. His keynotes at events such as GTC and Computex are closely watched by the whole industry.

Notable recognition

Time magazine named him among the 100 most influential people in 2021 and 2024, and in 2025 included him among the “Architects of AI” for its Person of the Year. He has also received many engineering and business leadership awards.

Current work

Huang continues to lead NVIDIA as it builds AI chips, networking, software and complete AI data center systems. He is also a well-known figure in Taiwan, where NVIDIA works closely with chip manufacturing partners.

Vision and philosophy

Huang is known for flat, fast-moving management and for telling people to embrace hardship as a teacher. He has said he does not wear a watch because “now is the most important time.”

Online presence

His keynote presentations, often in his signature black leather jacket, are streamed live and viewed by millions on NVIDIA’s channels.

The AI turning point

In 2012, a research team trained an image-recognition network called AlexNet on NVIDIA graphics cards and won a major competition by a wide margin. The result showed that GPUs were ideal for deep learning. Huang quickly steered NVIDIA toward AI, building data-center chips, networking and software libraries. When generative AI took off in 2022 and 2023, NVIDIA’s chips became the standard for training large models, and the company’s value rose faster than almost any company in history.
