Who is MS Dhoni?

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, known as MS Dhoni, is an Indian cricketer and former captain of India. A wicket-keeper batter famous for calm finishing and smart leadership, he is the only captain to win three different ICC limited-overs tournaments.

Early life and background

Dhoni was born in Ranchi in 1981. He made his first-class debut for Bihar in 1999 and, from 2001 to 2003, worked as a travelling ticket examiner for Indian Railways at Kharagpur while continuing to play cricket.

Career highlights

  • India debut (2004): first ODI against Bangladesh; first Test a year later.
  • Captaincy: led India in limited-overs cricket from 2007 to 2017 and in Tests from 2008 to 2014.
  • ICC titles: 2007 World Twenty20, 2011 Cricket World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy.
  • IPL: led Chennai Super Kings to five titles.

Major achievements

He scored more than 17,000 international runs, including over 10,000 in ODIs at an average above 50, and captained India in more international matches than anyone else. India’s rise to number one in Tests also came under his leadership.

The 2011 World Cup final

Dhoni’s most famous moment came in the 2011 World Cup final in Mumbai. He promoted himself up the batting order, scored an unbeaten 91 and finished the match with a six, ending India’s 28-year wait for a 50-over world title. The innings is still one of the most replayed moments in Indian sport and summed up his ability to take responsibility when it mattered most.

Early breakthrough

Dhoni first caught national attention with his long hair and powerful hitting. In 2005 he scored an unbeaten 183 against Sri Lanka in Jaipur, at the time a world record score by a wicket-keeper in ODIs. Two years later, he was handed the captaincy for the first World Twenty20 and led a young team to the title, beginning one of the most successful captaincy careers in cricket.
